Australia’s ICT industry is one of the fastest growing and most innovative sectors of the Australian economy. Many companies in the industry are actively pursuing international business opportunities and winning new contracts in the global marketplace. Exports of Australian ICT contributed more than $5.3 billion to the economy in 2005 (ABS), and there is strong potential for even greater exports.

Because of the remarkable capability and export growth potential of the Australian ICT industry, Austrade has prioritised ICT as a key industry focus over the past decade, through active engagement at the government, industry and individual company levels.

Our international network of 55 ICT specialists in over 30 cities in key ICT markets worldwide provides daily assistance to Australian ICT companies who are seeking to sell their products, technologies and services offshore. The network supports Australian ICT exports by:

• Identifying and supporting new export capable companies in the Australian ICT sector.
• Facilitating sustainable exports for the ICT industry through the provision of export advisory services.
• Contributing to successful market expansion through the identification of new opportunities through its overseas offices.
• Working with government and industry allies to deliver and develop export-focused programs.
• Facilitating access to the Austrade Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) financial assistance program.

In the 2005-06 financial year, Austrade assisted 477 ICT companies to achieve export sales totalling $1.74 billion, a 19.6 per cent increase over the previous year. Three hundred and seventy-five ICT companies received a total of $21 million in financial assistance through the EMDG scheme, an average of $56,347 per recipient.
